When money pours, it really pours heavily. Recent news surfaced early April of 2015 that a U.S.-based investment company and a Macau-headquartered games and amusement operators are interested in putting-up, not just one, but two casino resorts in Cebu and Masbate.
This was confirmed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor), saying there was already a letter of intent submitted by the group, but did not give specifics on how far the investment would be. However, Reuters reported that US-based RiskWise Group and Macau Resources Group are planning to pour in $1B on two new casinos cum resorts, not in Manila, but in Cebu and in an island in Masbate.
RiskWise already had come up with an artist rendition of the proposed Mactan Leisure City, located in the northern part of Mactan Island Cebu, as reported by ABS-CBN’s ANC channel. As the Philippines is becoming a gambling hub and its marker grew 16% in 2014, experts expect this to grow further to 20%, hence, some of the world’s best gaming operators considered Cebu as one of the future of gaming destinations.
So many groups have placed their bets on Cebu’s economic magnet for prosperity. The Ayalas and Aboitizes knew these very well, so they came up with an alliance to develop a 15-hectare city centre in Subangdaku, Mandaue City Cebu, sealing their partnership.
Set to be launched in 2015, the new city center located within Cebu’s business district will be featuring residential developments and commercial spaces with retail and office segments which would be easily accessible to all major road arteries and public transportation modes. The close proximity of the property to airport and seaports make it an ideal place for businesses and a terrific gateway to the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao. These developments will not only further boost Cebu’s tourism industry, but also make employment more alive.
A decade-long wait finally materializes. On January 1, 2015, Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy, together with his daughter, Vice Mayor Teresita Sitoy-Choy, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, broke ground on Shell Island to bury a time capsule signaling the start of the construction of the third bridge that would link Cebu City to Mactan.
The project is a private-public partnership (PPP) between the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investment Corp.(MPIC) headed by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, and the town of Cordova, led by the mayor. The bridge is expected to ease traffic within Cebu City due to the influx of big businesses and tourists arrivals that were seen to increase yearly at an enormous phase.
Cordova town on its part will also benefit largely on the operation of the bridge as economic growth within Cebu Province is not limited to the Metropolis. Mayor Sitoy had concluded, that the bridge will open Cordova town to investors as a gateway to the hotels and white sand beaches of Mactan.
The town of Alegria, Cebu, specifically Barangay Montpeller, will soon have its own gas reserves. The Department of Energy (DOE) has recently announced and confirmed the presence of sizable amount of gas reserves in the said town that could be harvested to generate almost 5 megawatts of electricity enough to supply at least 6 towns of Alegria.
The Polyard Petroleum Group International was the company which found the reserve after months of drilling and exploration. They will have the right to exploit the find and set up a plant to utilize the gas for electricity generation and assured the residents of employment for the company.
This find, the DOE expected, will also yield oil in the long run when digging becomes deeper. This will help and benefit the local economy tremendously as they will be given shares from the company’s income.
